Lunch at a Szechuan Restaurant in Ningbo

Ningbo is a booming city filled which sees many migrants from poorer provinces particularly from Szechuan that have settled there in search of a job and a better life. Initially opened to serve the Szechuan migrants, Szechuan restaurants have also become very popular among the Ningbo locals who now enjoy the hot and spicy dishes that Szechuan Cuisine is renowned for.

And on my second day in Ningbo, one of my suppliers took me for lunch at one of her favorite Szechuan Restaurant. Because everything is in Chinese I have no idea what the name of the restaurant is but I have taken a photo of the menu and entrance for those of you that can read Chinese.

Restaurant Entrance

Upon entering one can smell the aromatic herbs and spices from all the different hot-pots that were being eaten at other tables. And within a few minutes our first dish called “Zhuge Gou Yi” arrived. Pardon my bad Pin Yin, but basically it’s an entire fish that is grilled with a bunch of seasoning that is then braised in a hot-pot filled with Szechuan Peppercorns and other spices. Being a fish lover this dish was absolutely delicious. The meat was really moist and eating it with the skin which has been seasoned with the spices definitely heightened the flavor. This is a dish that one must truly try when in a Szechuan Restaurant.

Grilled Fish Szechuan Style

The next dish was stir-fried frog legs with some Chili. Although this dish was a lot milder in flavor compared to the fish, I really liked the bouncy texture of the frog legs.

For vegetables we had Stir-Fried Cabbage with Oyster Sauce and Stir-Fried Eggs with Tomatoes. The cabbage was very simple like what we get in most restaurants and at home but it was a little bit oily. The eggs on the other hand were really good. It was fluffy and soft and the tomatoes were really plump.

Last but not least we also had dumpling soup. The skin of the dumpling was a little thick which gave it a nice bite and the moist and flavorful filling contained a mixture of pork and lamb.

Dumpling Soup

I really enjoyed the meal. Most of the dishes were good especially the fish and to top it all off the price was only RMB 150 which is really cheap for the stuff we had.
