We were really bored on Sunday and Andrew was missing Malaysian Food. Driving around Markham we found Coconut Island Restaurant and decided to give it a try.
The restaurant does not only serve the usual Nasi Lemak and Curry Laksa. It also also has some Tai Chow dishes such as Hokkien Mee, Wat Tan Ho, Claypot Yee Mee, Butter Prawns and even Sambal Petai.
Our first dish was Nasi Lemak. According to Andrew this is probably the healthiest nasi he has ever eaten as there was very little lemak flavor. It was even healthier with the serving of slice oranges on the side. The curry chicken was a little bland and the sambal wasn't too bad. What I liked most was the peanuts and ikan bilis which were served warm.
Claypot Yee Mee came next and it was quite good. The Yee Mee had a nice bite and the soup was rich and flavorful. Mixing it with raw egg and eating it with some chopped green chilli definitely reminded us of home.
Next came Wat Tan Ho. The hor fun was stir-fried in soya sauce just like Malaysia. The egg sauce was creamy and the prawns were plump. What disappointed us was the way the hor fun were clumped together which caused some parts to be cooked unevenly.
Last was my Thai Prawn Salad. Prawns were fresh but the dressing was a little salty for my liking.
Food cost us CAD 41 including tips and taxes. The food is not as good as back home but given the fact that we are over 12,000 KM away from Malaysia this restaurant is not bad. We would definitely come back for dinner and try the Tai Chow Dishes.
