Abalone Bak Kut Teh @ Sheng Huat, Jinjang, Malaysia

I haven't had Bak Kut Teh (Pork Ribs in Herbal Soup) in ages and was ecstatic when my parents made a reservation at one of their regular Bak Kut Teh joint called Sheng Huat in Jinjang Utara for some "Abalone Bak Kut Teh".

Sheng Huat Bak Kut Teh

I've never heard of Abalone Bak Kut Teh before and apparently Sheng Huat serves up one of the best KL Style Bak Kut Teh and also a killer Claypot Pork Trotter which Zhao Phin swears is one of the best he has had.

For those not familiar with Bak Kut Teh, there's actually two versions one from Klang and the other from KL. The Klang version which I usually prefer tends to have a thicker and richer soup while the KL version is much milder and lighter in flavor.

Anyways, let's get straight down to the food.

When my mum told me about Abalone Bak Kut Teh I couldn't picture what it would taste like until it arrived. It was just slices of Abalone that is boiled with the Pork Ribs and Bak Kut Teh soup. Sheng Huat's KL version is one of the best I've had with the Pork Ribs and Abalone very tender and the soup despite being mild still has some herbal flavor.

Yao Cha Kwai (Fried Cruellers)
Yao Cha Kwai
You can't have Bak Kut Teh without Yao Cha Kwai. These things are so good especially when dipped into the herbal soup as it absorbs the flavor of the soup while imparting some fried flavor into it

Braised Egg
Braised Egg
Whole Eggs are braised in a herbal broth with Dark Soy Sauce. The Egg was braised to a perfect texture with the White maintaining a bouncy texture and the Yolk just cooked.

Pig Intestines

Most would find this gross but Sheng Huat does this really well. There isn't any foul smell associated with the Intestines indicating it had been cleaned out very well. The Intestines were tender but at the same time chewy and elastic in texture and was a nice sponge in absorbing the herbal broth it was braised in.

Braised Pork Trotter

My favorite of all the dishes. The Dark Soy Broth was thick and flavorful from the Pork Trotter Fat that melted away from the hours of braising. The meat was tender and had a little heat from the use of chillies. This was so good!

Overall I must say Sheng Huat probably serves up one of the best "KL Version" Bak Kut Teh around the city and a killer Braised Pork Trotter. It may not be the cleanest nor most comfortable place to eat at but if you're serious about some Pork Trotter this is one of the best places in KL to have it.
