Although I'm of Hakka decent I haven't really eaten much Hakka Food except for the rare occasion when my mum would cook for us. Maybe it's the lack of restaurants serving good Hakka Food or the fact that I can't find a restaurant that serves up Hakka Food that is as good or authentic as what my mum would cook at home.
But after my recent visit to Hakka Ran I now have a place where I could go to when I am craving for a good Hakka Meal!
Stir Fried Abacus Seeds
This is really good! The flour dough had a nice bite to it and was delicious with the Spring Onions, Green Onions, Shredded Fungus and Dried Shrimps. I can't really describe the flavor here just that it's really good
Stuffed Tofu Puff
The Tofu Puff was stuffed with some minced pork and was really flavorful from the combination of Pork Meat and Fat.
Deep Fried Omelet with Rice Wine
This was delicious! The sweetness of the aromatic Rice Wine went so well with the Ginger. The omelet was fluffy and absorbed all the Wine. This was a killer dish we ordered two bowls of it.
Stir Fried Potato Leaves
The Potato Leaves had a mushy in texture and was Stir-Fried with the right amount of Garlic
Claypot Curry Fish
Although not a Hakka Dish the Claypot Curry Fish was pretty good. The Garoupa had a meaty texture and was delicious with the rich Coconut Curry
Stir Fried Bitter Melon with Salted Egg Yolk
The Bitter Melon was well-coated with the Salted Egg Yolk which masked the bitterness. However I much prefered the one I had at Empire Court in Toronto where the Bitter Melon was first Deep Fried. Here the texture of the Melon was very soft and limp
Braised Pork Trotter with Black Vinegar
I haven't had this in a long time. The Pork Trotter was very soft and went well with the Vinegar Broth which was sweet and sour with a hint of Ginger
Braised Deep Fried Pork Belly with Wood Ear Mushrooms
A typical Hakka Dish. The Pork Belly lacked the Nam Yue Flavor that I'm so accustomed to when my mum made it back home. Nevertheless it was pretty good with the Pork very tender absorbing the soy-based gravy
Braised Pork Belly with Yam
The Braised Pork Belly is so-so here. The Pork is not as tender as I'd like but the Yam was soft and delicious. The gravy was not overtly salty which was a good thing
Gui Lin Gou
The Turtle Jelly is apparently made in-house and has a very jelly like texture compared to others I've tried. It had a mild sweetness to it which was just nice for me because we did not need to add anymore sugar
Nearly everything we had at Hakkan Ran was good especially their Stir-Fried Abacus Seeds and Deep Fried Omelet with Rice Wine. In my opinion this is definitely the best alternative to my mum's Hakka Dishes.
