Restoran Overseas is one of KL's most established Chinese Restaurant Group. Popular among locals for over 3 decades their main branch at Jalan Imbi is one of my favorite restaurants for fine dining Chinese food.
During Chinese New Year Overseas is not only offering their traditional set-menus but also a one pot dish known as "Poon Choi" (Basin Food). Originally a Hakka Dish name Poon Choi is a labor intensive dish that takes quite a bit of skill to prepare as it usually includes up to 14 different ingredients being served in one pot (usually wooden). Reservations must be made a day in advance for this special dish.
Overseas' version contained a lot of gravy with ingredients such as abalone, prawns, mushrooms, dried scallops, goose feet, pork innards, braised pork belly, chicken, turnips, cabbage and much more all layered one on top of the other with the priciest ingredients on top. Despite catering to a very very full restaurant the chefs managed to pull out a winner. The ingredients were not overcooked in any way and the juices of the pork belly, abalone, vegetables and dried scallops melded together so well to create a delicious gravy to go with the rice.
We also booked their Char Siew in advance which is highly recommended because they usually run out very quick. Using pork belly the Char Siew was moist and juicy and had a really nice texture and flavor from the caramelized crust. This is probably one of the best places to eat Malaysian style Char Siew besides other popular joints such as Meng Kee.
My family and friends definitely enjoyed our dinner. It was a good break away from the traditional set-menus offered during Chinese New Year. If I'm not mistaken Poon Choi is still offered till March 1st.
