Taiwanese Food @ Zhen Shan Mei, Solaris KL

I treated my Badminton buddies to an early Chinese New Year Meal at Zhen Shan Mei in Solaris, Mont Kiara. The restaurant focuses mainly on Taiwanese Cuisine but with some modern touches from the chef.

We started off our meal with the highly recommended Taiwanese inspired Salmon Yee Sang. Unlike the traditional Yee Sang Zhen Shan Mei's version uses shredded lettuce which was actually very refreshing and had a light but crunchy texture. It was however also disappointing because the flavor of the dish was way too sweet and sour masking the flavor of all the other ingredients.

Next came our Double-Boiled Black Chicken Soup. The soup was very bland to all of us probably because it wasn't boiled long enough to let the flavors develop.

Our only meat dish that night came from the Pan-Fried Pork Liver. I don't really like pork liver due to it's gamey taste and grainy texture. However the liver here was excellent. It was coated in corn flour and lightly pan seared giving it a nice light crust and was not overcooked which eliminated the grainy texture I dislike. Flavor-wise the gamey taste was subdued from the strong flavor of the delicious sauce.

Spinach with Superior Stock was excellent. The stock was quite flavorful and had quite a strong garlic flavor from the whole garlic cloves.

Four Combination Platter came last even though it was suppose to be a starter. The platter consisted of Pan Seared Scallops, Smoked Duck, Stuffed Fish Ball with Fish Roe and a Mochi Type Maki.

We weren't very full after our main courses and so we ordered some desserts. We had the Red Bean and Sago Soup and Mochi stuffed Mango. The Red Bean and Sago Soup was very bland and watery and the mango in the stuffed Mochi wasn't very sweet.

Besides New Formosa Taiwanese Restaurant in SS2, Zhen Shan Mei is the second Taiwanese Food I've ever tried in Malaysia. The food wasn't very good nor did most of the menu items resemble the food I've had in Taiwan. There were many signature dishes that we wanted to try but since Ngai (my friend) needed to stay fit for his wedding we opted not to order them.
