Pork Belly @ Maple Yip Seafood Restaurant, Toronto

It’s been a while since I last visited Maple Yip Seafood Restaurant. This was “the” place for me when it comes Sweet and Sour Pork, a dish that can be found in any Chinese menu but extremely difficult to do well.

Tonight I had dinner there with Uncle and Aunty Leung who ordered a set menu that included their favorite Braised Pork Belly with Mui Choi. The pork belly had the right amount of fat and meat and was braised to a state where it melts in your mouth. The gravy was well balanced without being too salty or sweet. Delicious.

Roast Chicken with Onion Sauce was also really good. The skin crisp without a hint of fat and the meat was surprisingly tender including the breast. The chicken was a little under seasoned to go with the shredded green onions and sauce.

Steam Tilapia with Olives was something different from my usual Soy-Sauce Steam Fish. The sweetness and saltiness of the olives went really well with the Tilapia, which was steamed just perfect and did not contain much fat.

Stir-Fry Beef with Kai Lan was our last dish. The beef was tender and the Kai-Lan crunchy but they were both under seasoned making it a little bland.

Overall the food at Maple Yip is as I recalled it to be, good and cheap. Our set menu which also included soup and dessert cost CAD $50 after tips and taxes.
