Modern Shanghainese Cuisine @ Fu 1088, Shanghai

It’s Hairy Crab Season in Shanghai and I was lucky enough to be there for a couple of days for work. Browsing the Web I stumbled upon Shanghai’s Celebrity Food Critic Shen Hongfei who recommended Fu1088 for their Steamed Egg and Crab Meat Sauce. And so this was where my Kim, Mum and I went for dinner tonight.

Accolades

Like many trendy restaurants in Shanghai, Fu1088 is located inside a mansion that only offers private dining rooms even for a table of 2.

Cold Appetizer: Shanghainese Style Smoked Fish
Shanghainese Style Smoked Fish
This was a signature dish of Fu1088. Unlike other places where the dish is served cold here it is served right out of the wok. The fish had a nice crispy crust, was very moist on the inside and was sweet in flavor.

Bamboo Pith and Mushroom Soup

The soup was very earthy and was clean in flavor similar to a consommé.

A cholesterol buster that was recommended by our Waitress. The meat from the Hairy Crab was stir-fried with the roe making it a rich but sinfully delicious dish. It was served with some crispy toast, which went so well with the smooth texture of the crabmeat. We were also given some sweetened Vinegar that surprisingly changed the flavor of the Crab Meat. Adding vinegar mellowed down the strong flavor of the Crab Roe making it more balanced.

Braised Pork with Soy Sauce and Rock Sugar

The Pork had a nice gelatin layer of fat and the meat was quite tender. The sauce was thick and not overtly sweet. The pork had a nice balance of meat and fat

Hairy Crab Meat with Steamed Egg

This was recommended by ….. The Egg was perfectly steamed making it very soft and was topped with the same Hairy Crab Mixture as our Crab Dish

Deep Fried Prawns with Wasabi Mayo

Recommended by our waitress this was a dish that is also served in many Malaysian Cantonese Restaurants. The Prawns was juicy and had a nice crisp texture. The only downside however was the Wasabi Mayo Sauce which was bland

Braised Dao Miu in Superior Broth

A standard in every restaurant. The Dao Miu was fresh and the broth was quite flavorful. The mini meat balls was pretty good

Fruits
Fresh Fruits
Like all Chinese Restaurants in China, our meal ended with a complimentary plate of fruits

Fu1088 is definitely one of the better places to go for Modern Shanghainese Food. The food was very good compared to other Shanghainese Restaurants I’ve had and the service was excellent.
