Korean BBQ @ Shin Jung, First Markham Place, Toronto

There is a growing demand for Korean Food among the Markham and Richmond Hill Residents that has seen three Korean Restaurants open shop in First Markham Place. A fourth called Shin Jung recently opened and this was where we had dinner tonight.



The menu was pretty typical of any Korean BBQ Restaurant with BBQ Dishes that included Pork Belly, Beef Sirloin, Beef Ribs, Chicken and a variety of Stews and Rice Dishes. Not knowing what their specialty was we asked for recommendations as half the table wanted BBQ and the other wanted a regular Rice and Soup Dishes.


Korean Side Dishes

Our meal began with the usual assortment of small side dishes. The Kim Chi was definitely very spicy!


Seafood Pah Jeon

This was the best Korean Seafood Pancake I've had. Unlike others it wasn't soggy at all. There was a nice light crispy crust and the filling inside wasn't mushy. The batter was actually cooked just right.


Chicken Bi Bim Bap

Sam ordered this instead of the BBQ which I did not try.


Korean BBQ: Marinated Kalbi (Beef Short Ribs)


The Kalbi here was decent. The marinade wasn't too sweet and was quite tender. Our waitress helped us with the cooking which is something that is uncommon in most Korean BBQ places in Toronto.


Korean BBQ: Marinated Spicy Beef and Pork


The Spicy Pork was really good! It was mildly sweet and packed quite a bit of heat. It also had a small layer of fat which was great to eat into!


Spicy Tofu Soup

This was complimentary and it came last for some reason. The soup was good but was really spicy.


Overall Shim Jong's Korean BBQ was similar to the other Korean Restaurants I've eaten in. However the Seafood Pah Jeon is the best I've had so far.
