Hunan Cuisine @ Konner Chinese Restaurant

Over the past few years there’s been a proliferation of Chinese Restaurants that specializes in serving dishes from various regions of China. From Szechuan, Shanghainese, Xinjiang and North East Chinese Dumplings there’s at least a couple of restaurants that offers them.

Recently Torontonians can now sample authentic Hunan Dishes with the opening “China Restaurant” on Midland and Finch Ave. I’ve never heard about this place till Rick’s wife Lynn (a Hunan native) took me there for dinner claiming it to be serving authentic and Spicy Hunanese Food.

Naturally not knowing much about Hunanese Cuisine I left most of the ordering to Lynn who chose a myriad of dishes for Rick and I to sample.

Sauteed Chicken Gizzards with Spicy Pepper

This was one spicy dish with the Spicy Peppers numbing the tongue. The Gizzards were sliced paper thin and had a really nice chewy texture that had a little bite.

Smelly Tofu

This was my first time having smelly tofu that is black. The tofu was served with some Spicy Pepper Vinaigrette which caused the Tofu to be less crispy.

Sizzling Cabbage

This was really good. The Cabbage was really flavorful from being stir-fried with fatty pork, soy sauce and dried chilies. It wasn’t overcooked either maintaining a crisp texture.

Lamb Soup
Lamb Soup
This was the only dish we had that wasn’t spicy. The soup was full of lamb flavor and had a milky texture from the hours of boiling. The chefs were also very generous with the amount of lamb meat that was put inside.

Braised Pork Feet

The Braised Pork Feet was really good. I enjoyed the gelatinous texture of the Skin. It was obviously fat.

Stir-Fried Snails with Hot Pepper

I don’t know where the snails were from but they were really small and did not have much meat in it. One had to use a toothpick to get them out.

This was my second time having Hunan Food and I must say Restaurant China serves up some delicious Hunan Food that is both spicy and flavorful. It is according to Lynn the only restaurant that serves up Hunan Food that comes close to what she finds back home.
