I'm not very adventurous when it comes to Dim Sum in KL preferring to stick with the same Restaurants (Chynna, Grand Imperial and Shang Palace, Xin in Concorde) my friends and family frequents.
However this time round a friend of mine asked if I would like to join them at the "House of Tang" in Bangsar for Dim Sum, which I happily agreed!
Starters: Braised Peanuts and Pickled Papaya
Standard among many Dim Sum Restaurants in KL. The Braised Peanuts were pretty good.
Stir Fried Turnip Cake
This was pretty good. The Turnip Cake was crispy and not soggy and had a good flavor from the Egg and XO Sauce. At our request the chef "Malaysianized" it by adding chives and bean sprouts which gave it a much better texture.
Steam Prawn Dumpling with Asparagus
This was pretty good. The skin was soft and the use of asparagus instead of bamboo shoots gave the dumpling a crunchier texture and more earthy flavor.
Congee with Century Eggs
The Congee was not bad. It was HK Style where the Congee was cooked a to thick starchy consistency and was well-seasoned. The Fried Cruellers were crispy and was a good compliment to the Porridge
Spring Rolls with Minced Prawns
The Spring Roll was light and very crispy with ample Prawn Filling that was well seasoned and cooked.
Deep Fried Yam Dumpling
This was not bad as well. The filling was quite good and the Yam was nicely crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
Red Yeast Rice Roll with Prawns
This was quite good. The Prawns were cooked just right and there was good textural contrast between the soft Rice Roll and Crispy Prawn Batter.
Unagi Puff with BBQ Sauce
This was awful. The Pastry was a little burnt and wasn't very flaky and had a really foul buttery smell that we all disliked. The savory Puff did not go well with the Sweet Unagi at all.
Mini Egg Tarts
The Egg Tart had the same smell as the Unagi Puff Pastry. Although the crust was flaky we really disliked the taste from the strong Butter Smell.
Sizzling Marinated Meat Bao
This was very good. The Buns came sizzling hot from the Claypot with the Caramelized Onions imparting flavor on to the Buns. The Skin was Fluffy on the inside and still had a nice light crisp and the filling was very flavorful.
Salted Egg-Yolk Buns
This was not bad. The Bun was very soft and fluffy but the Salted-Egg Yolk wasn't as runny as I'd liked.
Thousand Layer Cake
This wasn't thousand layer cake for sure. It seemed more like "Malai Ko" with only just the Steamed Cake and a Layer of Custard Filling. It was quite good.
Overall I had mixed feelings about the Dim Sum served at House of Tang. Some were good such as the Sizzling Marinated Meat Bun, Steam Shrimp Dumpling and the Stir-Fried Turnip Cake. But the Egg Tarts and Unagi Puff were horrendous because of the foul after-taste probably the Margarine.
We were also unlucky to be seated next to a table whose baby puked next right next to us and our waiter did not offer to change our seats until we asked.
