Lunch @ Meierei (Vienna Day 1)

We were in Vienna during the weekend for the MJ Tribute. Despite being canceled we decided to stop over for the weekend to visit the city and sample some of their food.

Initially we wanted to have lunch at Vienna's only 2 Michelin Star Restaurant Steirereck but it was closed. Instead, we had lunch at their Bistro called Meierei which also shares the same kitchen as the main restaurant.

Pumpkin Spread and Sour Buttef
Our meal started with a basket of Rye and White Bread together with sour butter and a pumpkin spread. The Rye bread was firm to the bite and had some walnut seeds in it. The pumpkin spread had a nice creamy texture but was very mild flavor.

With over 120 different types of cheeses on the menu we decided to try an Austrian Cheese Platter. The plating was beautiful. The cheeses were arranged in a clock-wise order from mild to strong and each had their own description. Not being much of a cheese-eater I preferred the milder and creamy Camembert.

Fresh Green Salad

As simple as it looks this is probably one of the best salads I had. The greens were fresh and crisp and the vinaigrette was excellent! The salad did not taste oily and the vinaigrette was perfectly balanced between sweet, sour and saltiness.

Viennese Wedding Soup
Vienese Wedding Soup
This is a very simple soup that contained 4 different Viennese Dumplings in Beef Consomme. The ball was a liver dumpling whose texture is very soft and definitely very full in liver flavor. The dark long piece tasted like it was pan-fried bread. The white long piece had a crispy texture which we both liked. But we have no idea what it was. The 4th dumpling was shredded eggs. Unlike most places the Beef Consomme was very clean in flavor and salted just right.

Braised Veal
Braised Veal
This dish resembled the one we had at Kafer during Oktoberfest. Flavor wise they are two completely different dishes. The tender pieces of veal was served with some French Toast and a jus with mushrooms. Unlike Kafer's version where the sauce was very flavorful, the jus here was very mild and acted mainly to heighten the flavor of the veal.

Overall we had a very good lunch and our meal cost 44 Euros. Dining in the sister restaurant of the 2 Michelin Star Steirereck and comparing it with Oktoberfest prices I would say Meierei is reasonably priced.
