Excellent French Bistro Fare @ Mark One

Located in North Point, Mark One is popular among my friends for serving some really good Western Cuisine at a very good value. We celebrated my friend's son Max 1 year old birthday there. The restaurant features a 4 Course Menu (Soup, Salad, Main Course & Dessert) whose price differ pending on the main courses ordered and an Ala Carte menu of appetizers. We each ordered a different Main Course.

I thoroughly enjoyed our Dinner that night! Mark One serves some really solid food using premium ingredients at a very affordable price. This is a place I would recommend friends to pay a visit in HK for Western Food.

Michelin Star Dim Sum @ Tim Ho Wan

We paid a visit to Tim Ho Wan in HK to sample its famous BBQ Pork Bun and Dim Sum that has helped earn the restaurant a Michelin Star. We dined at their Sham Shui Po location.

The Dim Sum we had was definitely good but it wasn't better than some of the Dim Sum Restaurants I've had. My favorite of was their famous BBQ Pork Bun which I've not had anywhere else. The Bun had a nice crumbly texture that melts in your mouth upon biting into it.

Sizzling Pork Knuckle @ Restaurant in HK

My friends took me for some local Hong Kong Dai Chow at this restaurant in New Territories. Located in some a small alley the restaurant operates on two separate neighboring shop lots and was quite full even on a weekday.

I really enjoyed their Roast Goose. The Skin was Crispy and the Meat was tender and seasoned just right.

Steamed Scallops with Minced Garlic
Steamed Scallops with Minced Garlic
The Scallops was another favorite of mine. The Minced Garlic really complimented the sweetness of the Fresh Scallop.

Signature Pork Knuckle
Signature Pork Knuckle
The Pork Knuckle was fork tender and soaked in a Black Pepper Sauce. It was flavor packed dish that was quite good. Nearly every table ordered this dish.

Stir-Fried Clams with Black Bean Sauce
Stir-Fried Clams in Black Bean Sauce
The Sauce was a little too salty for my liking and over-powered the natural sweetness of the clams. I didn't really like this dish.

Chicken Casserole
Chicken Casserole
We were too stuffed to eat the Chicken. The soup was quite good and the meat was falling of the bone. It was our least favorite of the dishes because it was rather bland compared with everything else we ordered.

Scrambled Eggs @ Australia Dairy Company, Hong Kong

My friends took me for some typical Hong Kong Western Style Breakfast at Australia Dairy Company on Jordan Street. According to them this place is popular among locals for their Scrambled Eggs, Efficient Serving Speed and Bad Attitude.
We arrived with a long queue upon arrival but it took us no more than 15 minutes before we were seated. The turnover of the restaurant was amazingly quick with our food arriving within 5 minutes upon order.

The eggs were pretty good in flavor although the Scrambled Eggs were not the fluffiest I had. This maybe because it was scrambled with just eggs without the addition of cream or butter. The Toast we had was good. It had a light crisp but was very soft in the center.

Ramen @ Kakurega Ramen Factory, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong

I made a brief stop-over in Hong Kong for approximately 4 hours where I met up with my friend Stanley for lunch. He was craving for some Tsukemen Ramen and brought me to a dinky little shop inside Sham Shui Po building called Kakurega Ramen Factory.

I enjoyed the texture of their Ramen. The noodles have a nice al-dente texture and are similar to those served at Menya Mushashi. Both the Kakurega White and Black Tonkotsu Broths are rich and packed with Pork goodness. The Onsen Eggs were also perfectly done with the yolk still runny.

Pig's Blood, Intestines and Cartilage @ Ming Fat, Temple Street Hong Kong

I was in Hong Kong for the night staying near Temple Street. Searching for a dinner place Wing Fatt caught our attention with their open-air environment and live seafood swimming inside plastic tubs.

Wing Fatt

Pig's Blood
Pig's Blood
Something I rarely eat and enjoy. The Pig's Blood here did not contain any foul smell that I usually taste when eating it

Braised Intestines and Goose Meat
Braised Intestines and Goose Meat
The Intestines were good. It was tender and was cleaned well and did not have any foul smell. The Goose Meat was also very tender. Their Chiu Chow Braised Gravy however was a little light in flavor.

Fried Chicken Cartilage with Garlic
Fried Chicken Cartilage with Garlic
My favorite. I liked the crunchy texture of the Softbones which were made even crunchier from being Deep Fried. It was served with a sauce that tasted similar to Japanese Katsudon Sauce.

Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Garlic
Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Garlic
The Bok Choy was overcooked leaving the vegetables limp and pale. It was also a little over-salted

Sauteed Razor Clams with Black Bean Sauce
Sauteed Razor Clams with Black Bean Sauce
The Clams were cooked just right but somehow the Black Bean Sauce wasn't very good with the Clams

Steam Prawns with Garlic
Steam Prawns with Garlic
The Prawns were not fresh and was very chewy and had a powdery texture

Overall the food at Wing Fatt wasn't very good particularly their seafood dishes we ordered. The only thing I really enjoyed were their Braised Intestines and Chicken Cartilage.

Hot Pot @ 潮民, Hong Kong

I was in Hong Kong for a night and stayed with my friend Stanley who took me out for some Hot Pot just right below their apartment in Causeway bay. The Hotpot restaurant is popular among locals for their Tomato Crab Broth which was something I've never tried before.

Tomato Hot Pot Broth with Blue Crab
Special Hot Pot Broth
Vietnamese Blue Crab
This is the restaurant's signature Broth. It tasted like HK-style Russian Bortsch and surprisingly complemented all the Beef, Lamb and Pork we ordered. The Blue Crab that was thrown into the broth added a richer flavor because of its roe.

Dipping Condiments
Dipping Condiments

Fatty Beef
Fatty Beef
As the name implies the Beef was very fat and melts in your mouth. It was thinly sliced and wasn't served frozen which did not dry out the meat

Fried Fish Skin
Fried Salmon Skin
The Fish Skin here was really good. It was very crispy and was served piping hot.

Mongolian Lamb Slices
Mongolian Lamb Slices
The Mongolian Lamb Slices was not very fat and had a strong lamb flavor.

Beancurd Sheet Rolls
Fried Bean Curd Sheet Roll
A favorite of mine when eating Hot Pot in Hong Kong. The Beancurd Rolls were freshly fried and did not taste too oily. It was light, crispy and consisted of many thin layers which allowed the outside to absorb the broth and the inner layers to maintain its crispiness when bitten into.

Fish Maw Dumplings

It was my first time eating Fish Maw Dumplings.

I really enjoyed the Hot Pot at this place especially their broth which I've never had before. The Tomato flavor definitely help accentuate the meatiness of the all the meats we ordered.

Roast Goose @ Yung Kee, Hong Kong

Patronized by locals and tourists, Yung Kee is one of Hong Kong's most established restaurants that is renowned for their Roast Goose. Despite my many trips to Hong Kong I've never eaten at the restaurant except for that one time on a Cathay Pacific Flight while flying on first class from Hong Kong to Toronto three years back. As I recalled Cathay was promoting Hong Kong Cuisine in their flights and had Yung Kee design and cater for their in-flight meals. I remembered sampling their delicious Poon Choi which till today I have not forgotten.

Yung Kee

After three years I've finally paid a visit to Yung Kee at Lan Kwai Fong. With no reservations made we were lucky to find the restaurant pretty empty as my clients and I arrived for a late lunch around 2pm. Not knowing what other signature dishes they're known for I left the ordering to my clients and ate whatever came.

Preserved Egg
Century Eggs
This was our complimentary appetizer and it was really good! The yolk was a little runny giving it a nice contrast to the gelatin like blackened egg white. It is delicious when eaten with the pickled ginger

Roasted Goose
Yung Kee's Famous Roast Goose
The roast goose was really tender and flavorful. But I was a little disappointed with the skin. It wasn't as crispy as I would have hoped for. Nevertheless I really enjoyed it

Special Fried Tofu
Deep Fried Tofu
This was really good. The skin of the tofu was crispy and thick and was an excellent contrast to the super soft tofu

Deep Fried Prawns
Deep Fried Prawn in Bean Curd Sheet
This was very good. I think the prawns were wrapped in a thin bean-curd sheet, fried and then tossed in some sauce. The Prawns were fresh and not overcooked and the bean-curd sheet gave it a light and crispy texture

Scallop and Prawn Dumpling
Prawn and Scallop Dumpling
My favorite. The skin was soft and thin and the it had the right amount of salt to draw out the natural sweetness of the prawns

Siew Mai
Siew Mai
Nothing spectacular here. There's definitely way better Siew Mai then Yung Kee.

BBQ Pork Bun
BBQ Pork Bun
The BBQ Pork Bun was decent but I still prefer the one's in KL which are a lot softer

Ham Sui Kok: Deep Fried Rice Dumpling with Pork and Vegetable Filling
Ham Sui Kok (Fried Glutinous Rice Dumpling)
This was really good Ham Sui Kok. It had a crispy exterior and the inside was soft and chewy. Most important of all it didn't taste oily

Honestly I was hoping to be wowed by their dishes which didn't happen that day. Their Dim Sum dishes were good but I could name a couple of other places that are better. Most important of all was the Roast Goose. If only the skin was crispier I think that would have sealed it for me.
